Mindfulness-based interventions: addressing healthcare burnout
Burnout is an escalating issue among healthcare workers, leading to decreased wellbeing, increased staff turnover, and lower-quality patient care. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these challenges, revealing critical vulnerabilities within healthcare systems. In response, the UNSW Business Insights Institute, in collaboration with the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD), has been exploring innovative solutions to this growing crisis.
A growing crisis in healthcare
Healthcare workers in Australia, much like their counterparts globally, have reported significant increases in anxiety, depression, and burnout since the onset of the pandemic. Burnout manifests as emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and a decline in professional efficacy, leading to a detrimental impact on both individual and organisational performance. Recent surveys show alarming levels of concern among healthcare professionals, with 87% of physicians and 79% of nurses reporting burnout.
To address these issues, the UNSW Business Insights Institute engaged with SESLHD’s Sexual Health and Blood Borne Viruses (SHBBV) services in a project focused on implementing mindfulness-based interventions. These interventions are designed to help healthcare staff manage stress and improve their overall wellbeing, thereby mitigating the effects of burnout.
Positive results from applied research
The project involved a series of mindfulness and positive mindset training sessions, aimed at enhancing emotional intelligence, resilience, and stress management among healthcare workers. The outcomes were promising: participants reported improved mindfulness, better team dynamics, and a general increase in wellbeing. This research demonstrates the potential of mindfulness-based interventions to create lasting positive changes in high-stress environments like healthcare.
